Donald Norman

Donald A. Norman (December 25, 1935) is Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego and Professor of Computer Science at Northwestern University, but today works primarily with cognitive science in the domain of usability engineering. He also teaches at Stanford University.

Norman’s early books deal mainly with usability or cognitive psychology, but Things That Make Us Smart also do some criticism of the nature of our society, in particular Norman does not like the lack of TV content and bad museum exhibits. He lately he tends to focus on the positive. He likes the products that we enjoy using them, a characteristic he attributes to bringing together emotions and design, or mind and heart. He has explained this concept in detail in his book Emotional Design.

He is a promoter of the concept of information appliances, about which he has written in his book The Invisible Computer.

He co-founded the Nielsen Norman Group, a group of consultants dedicated to usability. Norman currently divides his time between consulting and his teaching and research at Northwestern and Stanford.
